Donation bin drop-offs on hold during pandemic

Area residents are being asked for the time being to hold onto the used items they want to donate to charity.

The pick-up of donations by Diabetes Canada stopped March 23 when the government deemed the organization a non-essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sarnia's Director of Parks and Recreation Rob Harwood said donation bins have been overflowing and they've been working to clean areas up.

"We have boxes at our arena sites that are with the Diabetes association and they do the pick-ups and basically maintain them, but unfortunately at this time, they don't have anybody out actively doing that," said Harwood. "So what we've done is removed the boxes from the public and put them into locked compounds until they can go back into service again."

Harwood said while he appreciates residents are willing to give to those in need, they'll have to hang onto those items a little longer.

Diabetes Canada said they've temporarily laid off more than 500 staff who manage the donation bin service.

Goodwill has also blocked off its closed centres in an effort to deter donation drop-offs.
