UPDATE: Local COVID-19 cases spike again, eighth death reported

Sarnia-Lambton's COVID-19 case count climbed by 11 Sunday and another death was reported.

Lambton Public Health's updated numbers at 9 a.m. showed 79 confirmed cases, and Bluewater Health reported the death of an eighth patient later in the morning.

The hospital's Communications and Public Affairs Chief Julia Oosterman said the latest patient to die is a 69-year-old female who was admitted March 22.

The health unit said there were 36 people self-isolating at home, and three declared to be recovered.

Further details about the 16 new confirmed cases reported over the weekend were not immediately available. Another five cases were reported Saturday.

The number of confirmed cases in Lambton County has risen to 79 in less than two weeks with the first five cases being reported March 25.

As of Friday, there were 15 confirmed cases at Sarnia’s Landmark Village retirement home, nine residents and six staff, with four deaths linked to the facility.

Bluewater Health also reported Sunday morning that there were 32 patients in hospital confirmed to have the virus and nine suspected of having it with tests pending.
