Dennis fundraises, donates city council pay to pandemic cause

A first-term Sarnia councillor is giving back to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bill Dennis said we're all in this together and helping out is the least he can do.

"My birthday was last month and I started a fundraising campaign on Facebook and my friends and family donated contributions in lieu of birthday presents," said Dennis. "I asked for donations to the Inn of the Good Shepherd and I mentioned that I would match dollar, per dollar, up to $500, and we raised almost $2,000."

Dennis said after that he decided to go one step further.

"Giving feels good and I thought to myself, I'm so inspired watching what's taking place in the community right now, people are giving their time, grocery store workers, truck drivers, first responders, nurses, doctors, people putting in all sorts of time going the extra mile and what I decided to do is donate my councillor's pay until we get back to some sort of normalcy."

Dennis donated $500 to the Inn in March and is donating $500 each to Lambton Elderly Outreach, River City Vineyard and The Salvation Army in April.

Dennis said he's trying to keep himself busy while isolating at home.

He said he's been reading more, catching up on Netflix shows and taking his dog for walks.
