Walpole Island man charged following wild police chase

A Walpole Island man is facing several charges after a wild chase with city police and the OPP over the weekend.

Sarnia police were called about a suspicious vehicle at around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday in a parking lot in the 900 block of Tashmoo Avenue.

When officers arrived, a vehicle drove directly at the cruiser nearly striking it and then fled west on Plain Lane.

The vehicle was located heading south on Highway 40, crossing in and out of lanes and onto the gravel shoulder at times. Police said the vehicle nearly hit other vehicles driving into oncoming traffic and was not stopping at intersections.

Lambton OPP officers were called in to assist and stop sticks were deployed. However, despite deflated tires, the vehicle didn't stop.

Just after 5 a.m., officers blocked the area of Lasalle Road and Highway 40, and the vehicle drove into the driver's side of a city police cruiser causing significant damage to both vehicles. The officer was not hurt.

The driver was taken to hospital for observation and later released back to police custody.

A 32-year-old Walpole Island man is now charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, operation of a motor vehicle while impaired, possession of a controlled substance and five counts of failing to comply with a release order.
