New United Way Compassion Fund provides emergency grants

Three local agencies are benefitting from the new Compassion Fund established by the Sarnia-Lambton United Way.

Included in the first round of grants was the Family Counselling Centre. The agency has experienced an increased number of referrals during the COVID-19 pandemic and the funding will be used to help hire additional staff.

The Boys and Girls Club is remotely operating its backpack program assisting with personal care and food items on a requested basis. Funds have been received to expand the program to include rent, unpaid bills and medical expenses.

The United Way is also helping the Salvation Army, which has seen an influx of clients at the food bank. The money will help purchase food and hygiene products for clients.

Each charity has received $5,000.
