City police will enforce pandemic orders, but businesses cooperating

Sarnia's police chief says the local business community appears to be following closure orders set out in the province's state of emergency declaration.

Norm Hansen said so far restaurants and bars are complying with the directives issued Tuesday, but the city police department will enforce the rules if it has to.

"When the province orders the closure of businesses, it enacts an enforcement capability that we can lay charges if people are refusing to close when they're told to," said Hansen. "I'm not expecting that to occur, it seems everyone is taking this seriously and the community is coming together."

Takeout and delivery are still allowed under the provisions that are in place until March 31.

Private schools, licensed child care centres, theatres, cinemas and concert venues are also required to close.

"I've seen things on social media where they're saying this place is open or that place is open but quite often those posts are a week-and-a-half old, so we haven't had any complaints that way," Hansen said.

Organized events of 50 people or more are also banned.
