Sproviero captures OUA rookie of the year award

A former Sarnia Sting forward is making a great impression in his first season of university hockey.

Western's Franco Sproviero has captured the OUA West Division men’s hockey rookie of the year award.

The 21-year-old Sarnia native had a tremendous first season, putting up 15 goals and 19 assists for a team-leading 34 points in 24 games.

He finished atop the rookie scoring race and tied for second with six shorthanded goals.

In the postseason, he has five points in nine games.

Sproviero and the Mustangs are back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. as they host Concordia in the bronze medal game.

The winner will move on to the U Sports national championship from March 12 to 15 in Halifax.

Sproviero had 46 goals and 89 assists in 214 career games with the Sting from 2014 until 2019.

He also suited up for the Lambton Shores Predators, and for the Lambton Junior Sting Minor Midget AAA program.
