Residential high-rise planned at London Road Shopping Centre

Plans are in the works to build a residential tower at the southeast corner of the London Road Shopping Centre in Sarnia.

Elison Developments wants to construct an 11-storey building, at the former Jack Doyle's space, with room for 133 rental units.

The first floor would include around 1,000 square feet of commercial space, with the floors above used for apartments.

Spokesman Darren Dawson said they've submitted a rezoning application to the city to allow for mixed-use, which includes multi-residential.

It would also require amendments to Sarnia's official plan.

"The multi-residential, we believe, brings a different fit and brings a diverse feel to our plaza," said Dawson. "It's an idea that is actually supported by our tenants, and would really help benefit them as well. But, if the right tenant partner came along on the commercial or retail side of things then we'd definitely look at that, too."

Dawson is hoping to gain approval at the March 23 Sarnia council meeting.

Residents who wish to speak about the application are asked to contact the clerk's office by March 18 to get on the agenda.

Councillor Brian White expected the tone at the meeting to be generally positive.

"I expect support for this kind of a project for sure," said White. "But, I have already heard from some folks about some concerns that they have in regards to traffic flow, especially in the neighbourhood behind there. So, we'll take that very seriously and make sure we iron out all of the issues before we move forward with a project like that."

If approved, Dawson said shovels will be in the ground in either fall of this year or spring of 2021.

There would be access to the plaza off of Afton Drive.

The plaza has undergone quite the transformation in the past five years with the additions of Tepperman's, Giant Tiger, Twisted Arm, and a new commercial unit in the middle of the parking lot.

Dawson said they've had great success in completing new commercial and retail units in their Phase Two plans and there will be an announcement in the coming weeks about new tenants who have leases in place.
