Pit crew coach to deliver motivational speech in Sarnia

A NASCAR pit crew coach and former pro hockey player is coming to Sarnia to inspire local residents to live their best life.

Shaun Peet will deliver his 1 Good Shift presentation at the Imperial Theatre March 5 at 7:30 p.m. -- tickets are now on sale.

Peet said the event, which is meant for everyone, can change the trajectory of the game of your life.

"I mean I think sports fans will get a kick out of it, but it really can affect anybody. It's just about looking at the way things like failure and disappointment and these things come into our lives and how we can navigate them a different way to come out the other side the better for it," he said. "It's about the things that we face in life and how if we just shift our mindset just a bit, how much easier it is to tackle all of these things. So it's just an event to try and inspire human brilliance."

Peet said the presentation was born out of an opportunity to speak at the NFL combine in 2018.

"As a pit crew coach, my job is to train five guys to change four tires in 12 seconds, you know, like our guys operate on the verge of what is humanly possible. A lot of these teams wanted to know how we do that, how we can get five guys to work so succinctly," he said.

"What's interesting is that there's a lot of corporate speak now about how offices want their teams to work like pit crews, but they don't understand what goes into that. They think it's just a system thing or a brilliant strategy, and it's not. Our guys are so good at working together because of things like their emotional intelligence, their empathy, their work ethic."

Peet grew up in Western Canada, he played four years of hockey at Dartmouth College in the US before making the jump to pro hockey in the AHL, ECHL, and other leagues in North America -- Peet also made a Calder Cup appearance in the early 2000s.

Peet said he was turned onto racing when playing for the Greensboro Generals in North Carolina, what he calls the heart of NASCAR county.

He said his story could motivate you and make you realize that you are much closer to unlocking your human brilliance than you may think.

"Like I said, if we just look at things, a couple different things differently, we can craft this life that we dream of."

Tickets for the presentation, Peet's first in Canada, range from $15 to $45 and can be purchased by clicking here.

Proceeds from the event will help benefit St. Clair Child & Youth Services.
