Coronavirus confirmed at nursing home, not COVID-19

Infection control measures are in place at a Sarnia nursing home.

Lambton County Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sudit Ranade said lab results confirm a respiratory outbreak at the home is the Coronavirus, however, it's not the same strain as COVID-19.

"It is the plain old, regular Coronavirus that circulates all of the time in the community. It generally causes symptoms that are mild, like you would consider a common cold."

Dr. Ranade said action has been taken to prevent the spread of the virus.

"Just the routine infection control measures that we do when there's any kind of respiratory outbreak are in place there. So there's limiting the movement of care providers between facilities, limiting the exposure of ill patients to well patients, and things like that."

Notices are posted at Sumac Lodge, located at 1464 Blackwell Rd., asking the public not to visit residents at the home if they're not feeling well.

Lambton Public Health took to Twitter Tuesday to ease community concerns.

Dr. Ranade reminds residents to protect themselves from the spread of viruses by washing your hands often and staying home from work or school if you're feeling ill.
