Petrolia seeking public comment on 'walkability' plan

The Town of Petrolia is gathering public input on a plan that would pave the way for more sidewalks, walkways and bike lanes in the community.

A public meeting to consider a proposed official plan amendment is set for February 10 at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at Victoria Hall.

Clerk Mandi Pearson said they're considering incorporating recommendations from their Community Well Being Master Plan.

She said the goal is to create a healthier, more walkable community by providing more accessibility to the town's "health hub" on Glenview Road.

"We've got a family health team, we've got services through the pharmacy and dental, and obviously our C.E.E Hospital is there with our emergency room and continuing care, and so this would just make more of a walkability for our seniors and our community as a whole."

Pearson said the plan builds on the idea that a walkable community is a healthy community.

"This would show sidewalks and possible bike lanes in the town, but in essence eventually everything would be linked in the town through sidewalks, so any new developments would be required to put in sidewalks, and we would also incorporate some additional paths where there aren't sidewalks in town," she said. "It would also have streets designed in a grid pattern, so people could use the roadways as well, and the access isn't going to be as much of a cul-de-sac as it would be a thoroughfare, and the final would be a mix of housing, so just a possibility of low, medium and upper-income housing."

The town and Bluewater Health presented the master plan to council in 2018.

Pearson said residents can provide input for or against the idea in person or in writing.
