Apparently the phone number of the Sarnia courthouse is being used in a scam.
City police say the courthouse has received an onslaught of telephone calls mostly from Ottawa residents, and some from Sarnia-Lambton, about alleged warrants for their arrest.
Police say the callers are telling residents that either their taxes were not paid or their social insurance number was used in a crime.
The phone number being left on messages is the number to the Sarnia courthouse (519-333-2950). Police are asking residents not to call the number.
Police say no agency will threaten you with arrest in exchange for money, and that if you receive a call like this, just hang up. They add if payment is asked for in bitcoin or gift cards it's a scam.
If you have provided personal information or sent money to someone and suspect you were scammed, call police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
