Board wants timeline update from GLSS contractor

Construction work at Sarnia's new Great Lakes Secondary School continues to be plagued by delays.

It was hoped the addition at the Murphy Road site, the former St. Clair Secondary School, would be completed by Christmas.

Lambton Kent District School Board Superintendent Brian McKay said work on two new music rooms, an Indigenous Room and the auditorium is behind schedule.

The board will meet with the contractor Tuesday to get an updated timeline and an explanation for the chronic delays.

He said they're anxious to get students and staff in the new space with the second semester just around the corner

"We continue to push, we need those spaces back as soon as possible," said McKay. "We want them back, our students and staff are waiting. They're excited to get into those new areas, so we want to turn them over to the school so that we can take full use of the new facility in that addition area."

McKay said school administration and staff have been excellent in keeping any impacts on learning to a minimum. Students from the closed SCITS on Wellington Street finally moved to the Murphy Road site in September 2019.

"What we're finding, especially with our music class is they're using normal classrooms which are not the best spaces for a music program to run," he said. "We want to have that tiered specialty music room available for the music students."

Construction of the estimated $25 million project started in late 2017.
