Warm start to the year expected in Southwestern Ontario

We can expect some above-normal temperatures for at least the first few weeks of the new year.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Sherry Williams said things have warmed up in Southwestern Ontario following a cold start to December.

"It looks like, for the next two weeks, above-normal temperatures, and then as we get into the later half of January, it's looking like temperatures will be closer to normal, perhaps still slightly above," said Williams.

Williams said weather models are also showing slightly above normal precipitation values for January, but that it's difficult to predict whether it will fall as rain or snow.

Williams said December was a very up and down month.

"We sort of had some really cold temperatures at the start and mid of December, and then it got really warm as you got into the later half of the month, and then to finish up December for Southwestern Ontario, it was a big rainstorm with a lot of wind, so it was kind of all over the place," she said. "Winter could be sort of a back-and-forth, or you could hit a cold spell and then be stuck in a cold spell for a while, or we could be stuck in a warm spell. At this point for the whole winter, we sort of only look at average trends because it's really hard to see if it's an up and down thing."
