Enbridge Gas adjusting rates in the new year

Residential Enbridge Gas customers in Sarnia-Lambton will be paying slightly more beginning January 1.

The Ontario Energy Board has approved a rate increase of about $6 per year, or just under 1 per cent of the total bill.

Enbridge spokesperson Andrea Stass said the change reflects some forecasted increases in the North American market price of natural gas.

"So, we adjust the prices that we pay for gas to reflect market costs every three months," said Stass. "There are also some changes in delivery rates, so that's the cost for us to actually deliver it to homes and businesses. To reflect the cost to do that in 2020, we adjust those costs once a year."

Meanwhile, local businesses will be paying $27 less annually starting in the new year.

Stass said that's due to a decrease in commercial delivery rates.

She said heating with natural gas is about $1,800 cheaper per year than electricity, propane or oil.

Customers are encouraged to save money by improving their energy efficiency. There are rebates available online at www.uniongas.com/savemoney.
