Thanks to a late surge in donations, there's now a realistic chance the Sarnia-Lambton United Way campaign will reach its fundraising target.
The campaign is at $1,852,000, or 97.5 per cent of the $1.9 million goal, which is 10 per cent more than a week ago.
Executive Director Dave Brown said there were a number of contributing factors.
"NOVA presented their final employee numbers, so when you count the employees, the corporation and the retirees, that helped us get to where we are. DOW Chemical in Corunna also completed and wrapped-up their campaign, and we've had a number of people who gave online, through the mail and even stopped by the office," said Brown. "Certainly over the next nine days we're pushing for more individual donors; most of the employee campaigns are done, so it's strictly up to individuals, including retirees. We do know that there is a great number people who like to wait until the last 48 hours before they support their favourite charities, so we're hopeful United Way will be in that mix."
Brown said if the target is met, funding for member agencies will be maintained, heading into the second year of a three year allocation plan.
"Something that keeps us relevant, I believe, and very proactive, is our Venture Grant program, and that enables us to do one-year funding up to $30,000 for non-funded agencies. Right now, for example, we're funding the income tax program at the Inn of the Good Shepherd, and the Handyman/Handywoman Program from Habitat for Humanity."
Brown said they also received support following the recent YourTV telethon, and he expects about $30,000 to still come in from various bingo and raffle fundraisers.
A total of 2,900 donors have contributed to the campaign which wraps up December 31.
The United Way supports 18 local agencies providing 36 programs and services.
