Sarnia lands world-class curling event

Sarnia has landed a world-class curling event next fall.

The Masters, the opening event of the 2020-2021 Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling season, will be held at Sarnia Arena on October 20-25.

The 18 draw event will showcase 30 of the best men's and women's teams from Canada and around the globe.

Tourism Sarnia-Lambton spokesperson Vicky Praill said it's a huge deal for the community.

There will be over 27 hours broadcast on Sportsnet to an estimated two million viewers.

"I'm an avid curling watcher, and lately I've been looking at the ice surfaces and seeing all of the different sponsors that sponsor the ice at different tournaments," said Praill. "There are definitely lots of opportunities to become a sponsor, and lots of chances to come out and volunteer as well."

Praill said the Sarnia Arena was chosen because organizers liked the intimate feel of the old barn.

She said similar events in other communities have generated around $1.3 million in revenue.
