Overnight parking restrictions being implemented

Sarnia's overnight parking restrictions for the winter come into effect Sunday.

The exemption was extended to December 1 after the restrictions were lifted a month early this past spring.

Director of Engineering David Jackson said vehicles will be prohibited from parking on city streets between 2 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. until to March 31 to allow for snow removal.

"It's a $20 fine if you're parking on the street overnight," said Jackson.

He said no one could have predicted the storm November 12, that dumped about a foot of snow on the city.

"When our crews were out clearing they had to go around parked cars and go back and clear the street once those cars were gone. So, it did create some challenges for us, but you can never predict what the weather is going to do," said Jackson.

The only exemption will be New Year's.

Motorists will be allowed to leave their vehicle on the street overnight to stay over or take a cab home from celebrations.

Last winter, from November 2018 to the end of March 2019, 5,268 overnight parking tickets were issued.
