Union reaches deal with CN Rail

A tentative agreement has been reached with CN Rail for about 3,200 conductors, train personnel and yard workers, including 165 in Sarnia.

Teamsters Canada Rail Conference says normal operations at CN will resume Wednesday at 6 a.m. across Canada.

Union President François Laporte said the tentative agreement must now be ratified by Teamster members via secret-ballot electronic voting.

Before the voting period opens, Laporte said union meetings will be held across the country to explain the terms of the agreement to members, which is expected to take months.

Details of the tentative agreement will not be released until the members have had a chance to review the document first.

Sarnia Lambton MP Marilyn Gladu is happy to see a resolution that's good for both sides and is hoping the union will ratify the deal.

"The important thing is that propane shipments will resume, so farmers that are in a real crunch right now will see that relieved and as well, the plants that were thinking they might have to shut down, will be back in business," said Gladu.

Workers walked off the job last Tuesday, bringing most freight trains across the country to a halt.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said last Friday it was in the national interest to resolve the dispute, because the petrochemical industry, agriculture and other sectors rely on rail.

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture had also started a petition in hopes of ending the week-long strike.
