Vacancy rebates ending in Lambton

Lambton County Council has voted to eliminate vacancy rebates at year's end.

The program had offered commercial and industrial property owners as much as a 35 per cent tax rebate in the past.

Finance, Facilities and Court Services General Manager Larry Palarchio said the direction was in line with decisions made by other municipalities.

"A lot of municipalities have stepped away from the vacancy rebates because of transitioning tax legislation," said Palarchio. "It was appropriately used at a certain point in time, but it is something that we knew was coming."

In April 2018, council decided to extend the program for two years.

The province gave municipalities the authority to decide whether or not they wanted to continue the program in 2017.

The Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce expressed concern that eliminating the rebate could result in more buildings being demolished by owners.

Those who can't lease vacant properties will still be able to get relief through the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation's reassessment process.
