Bluewater Health 'mini-medical school' to help educate residents

It's hoped a pilot project at Bluewater Health will better explain health-related topics to the Sarnia-Lambton community.

The hospital is starting a "mini-medical school" to provide the latest medical information on various diseases and conditions through a series of public lectures.

Chief of Staff Dr. Michel Haddad believes residents can really benefit from the service.

"We thought it was a neat idea. Our patients have always had a lot of good questions about their conditions, and this is one way to broadcast the information to a wider audience, especially when it comes to preventative measures before people get sick," said Dr. Haddad. "I'm hoping there will be an interest in the service. It's a pilot, for now, so we'll start by giving a few educational sessions and see what the uptick is like and then we'll decide next year if we'll continue with this service."

Dr. Haddad said various medical schools have launched the idea of mini medical schools to educate and help better inform the public.

He said it's an opportunity for Bluewater Health physicians to provide valuable information on the latest research related to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of residents.

"Usually it's based in academic centres where they actually have medical schools. Having said this, we do have an affiliation with Western University and many of our physicians are on faculty at the university as well, and we thought 'why not in Sarnia as well?' We can help better inform our own patients and families about various illnesses or diseases that they might be interested in hearing about."

Urologist Dr. Paul Martin will discuss prostate health on November 18. Radiologist Dr. Youssef Almalki spoke about cancer screening on October 24.

Dr. Martin's presentation will be held in the Auditorium on Level 2, London Building at Bluewater Health between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
