Career in policing encouraged at information session

The Sarnia Police Service wants to inspire people to consider a career in policing.

Sgt. Jaime McCabe said they're hosting an information session on November 16, where they'll be providing tips on how to successfully move through the hiring process.

"When I'm sitting at the interview table and I'm listening to people speak, there's a significant difference from the people who come prepared, to the people who don't," said McCabe. "It's a very competitive career to get into, so you want to put your best foot forward."

She said she hopes they can clear up some misconceptions too.

"A lot of people think that they require certain courses, and certain things to even become an officer, which is not true. There's several police officers who haven't taken anything to do with policing before becoming a police officer," she said.

McCabe said the information session will be followed by an open discussion with three veteran officers, who will share stories about their policing journey.

"I think anybody is good for this job and I think that's what makes this such a great career," she said. "There's so many different aspects of it and there's so many different places you can go within this job, that, to say that it's just one type of personality is a mistake. Each call requires something different from everybody."

The event at the Sarnia Library Theatre is open to everyone and goes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pre-registration is required, and anyone interested in attending is asked to email McCabe at 195@police.sarnia.on.ca.

Sign-in begins at 9:30 a.m.
