Funding sought to save Jackson Pool

There is still a fight to reopen Jackson Pool which closed over three and a half years ago.

Sarnia council directed staff to apply for federal infrastructure funding to refurbish or replace the outdoor pool in a 5-4 recorded vote Monday.

"For the last five or six years, the community has been very clear that they were supportive of Jackson Pool either being restored or replicated in that area," said Mayor Mike Bradley. "I think it's a very important part of the southern portion of the city and the recreation facilities."

Bradley said there's no guarantee the application will be approved.

"The competition will be heavy, because recreational services have always been the most difficult one to go to the public to fund when you have so many hard surfaces like roads, sewers and housing to provide to the public, so everyone is going to be taking a shot at this," he said. "I think we've put together a really good package of possible projects, and now we just have to wait to see what the federal government does."

Councillors Mike Stark, Nathan Colquhoun, George Vandenberg and Terry Burrell voted against the revised motion.

Staff originally recommended council support an application to decommission the pool and develop an outdoor splash pad.

Meantime, an application supporting the redevelopment of Germain Arena into an indoor multi-purpose facility received unanimous support.
