The Sarnia Sting have added a veteran goaltender to the fold following a trade with the London Knights.
On Tuesday, The Sting acquired Jordan Kooy from London for overage goaltender Dylan Myskiw and a conditional third-round pick in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection. The Sting picked up Myskiw off waivers earlier in the month.
Kooy, 19, has spent parts of four seasons with the Knights, compiling 34 wins in 66 games.
Sting General Manager Nick Sinclair said when you have the opportunity to acquire a goaltender like Kooy, it's something you need to explore.
"He's been one of the top tier goaltenders in our league over the last year to two years, he's an NHL drafted goalie that has a lot of pedigree, potential and ability, and he's played some really big games at times in this league. As a 19-year-old with the experience he has and the tools he has a player, we think he's going to be a big addition to our hockey club."
Sinclair said the Sting now have three really good goaltenders, in Kooy, Ben Gaudreau, and Ethan Langevin.
"We've got a young guy [Ben Gaudreau] that we feel is going to be a big part of our future, and then Ethan Langevin has had a really solid start to his OHL career, so we feel like we have a lot of depth in that position right now," said Sinclair. "Three guys that can all get in there and play, and just in this transaction being able to add a guy like Jordan, we feel we've gotten a lot stronger overall in the goaltending position, and we're going to have a good battle in the net here each and every night."
Kooy was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL draft. The Bradford-native has also been chosen to represent Team OHL in the upcoming 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series.
