Sarnia Cenotaph being updated with addition of 26 names

A number of fallen soldiers will be properly recognized this November 11.

Sarnia Historical Society President Ron RealeSmith said the names of 26 soldiers, recently added to the cenotaph at Veteran's Park, will be unveiled to the public during the annual Remembrance Day ceremony.

RealeSmith said each of the soldiers will be honoured and their story shared with the public.

"Then what we're doing is we're inviting everybody back to the legion on the November 11th to the upstairs hall," said RealeSmith. "We're going to have 26 banners, like large banners, that are going to tell you the story of each new person that's on the cenotaph, it's going to tell the story of their life."

He said several family members of one of the soldiers, Captain David Salmons, are flying in from Vancouver and Edmonton to take part in the ceremony.

"David Salmons, born and raised in Sarnia, married in Sarnia and his family is still in Sarnia, he went off to be in the military part of the 436 Squadron," he said. "He passed away in service to country, during a military mission. Other than the service, there's nothing that's a public declaration that says that he passed away and he's from Sarnia and that's what the cenotaph is for."

Donations to help pay for the family members' trip are being accepted through the Sarnia Historical Society.

RealeSmith said local author Tom Slater spearheaded the addition of the 26 names and restoration work at the Sarnia Cenotaph.
