Point Edward hotel tax in 2020

There will soon be an extra charge on hotel room bills in Point Edward.

The village is imposing a mandatory four per cent municipal accommodation tax, effective January 1, 2020.

It was approved by council after a pitch by Tourism Sarnia-Lambton's Mark Perrin Tuesday night.

Village CAO Jim Burns said the funds will be put to good use.

"Half of the money goes to the village, and half goes to a tourism marketing group," said Burns. "Our intention at this time is to send that portion of the money to Tourism Sarnia-Lambton (TSL) to do promotions and such for attracting events and things to the community."

The village is home to over half of Lambton county's hotel rooms.

"We're very aware that TSL is a county-wide organization, and they attract events to the county and not just Point Edward. We feel they do a good job of doing that work, and with these resources, they'll be able to attract more people to the county and a lot of the hotels are in Point Edward. We think that investment will pay off for the village and also the county."

The user-based fee is applied to all accommodations where people stay for less than 30 days.

If the tax is implemented across Lambton County, TSL said it could possibly bring in $1.2 million annually at a 50 per cent occupancy average of $110 a night.

The organization was also planning to make presentations to Lambton Shores and Sarnia councils.

Campsites and campgrounds for RVs are exempt from the fee, as are college and university residences, hospitals, long term care homes and hospices.
