Point Edward again seeking bids for Bridge Tavern property

The Village of Point Edward is issuing another call for tenders for the sale of the former Bridge Tavern property on Michigan Avenue.

No bids were received for the now-vacant property in 2018, largely due to $400,000 in liens on the site.

CAO Jim Burns said he is confident they'll have more luck this time around.

He said a few people have already contacted him with ideas for the property.

"The difference is that in 2018 it was going through a tax sale process, so there were several liens from the federal and provincial governments on the property. Those liens are now gone and the municipality owns the property, so if somebody, a developer, wants to come in and buy it, they can buy the property free and clear," said Burns. "I don't anticipate that there will be no bids because in the last six months I've had between four to six people in to talk to me with ideas about the property. So I really don't anticipate no bids, but if we don't [get any], then maybe at that point we engage a real estate agent to help us."

Burns said it's a prime piece of land and another business would be a welcome addition to the area.

He said they're looking to develop a marketing strategy to highlight the benefits of purchasing the land.

"I don't want to just say 'oh yeah, we've got this piece of land for sale down on Michigan Avenue, come take a look at it,' we want to market it properly and make sure that it's given the right property description to make sure that people are aware of what the property actually is and what potential there might be."

The historic Bridge Tavern closed on June 30 of 2017 after almost 60 years.

The Brodimas family owned the establishment for 38 years.
