New accessible playground to become Canatara focal point

Construction of a new state-of-the-art accessible playground and community hub is underway at Canatara Park.

Sarnia's three Rotary Clubs are helping fund the $335,000 project that's expected to become a vibrant focal point of the park, serving a variety of ages and abilities.

Rotary spokesman Mike Elliott said they money they chipped in was raised through their 'trip of the month lottery.'

"When we started, we didn't know what we were going to do with the funds, but after four years we had enough money we were able to make a sizable donation to something that the city needed and at the same time, renew an old playground that had been a Rotary playground from the 1980's I believe, or early 90's, that was worn out."

Elliott said it will be completely different than before.

"It's all very inclusive playground equipment, it's all accessible, it has all kinds of different sensory things, there's even a little adult area, there's some games tables, there's a stage being set up as well."

Elliott said the playground will have a poured rubber surface.

The project is expected to take a few weeks to complete.
