Flu vaccines available, clinics scheduled

Flu vaccines are available as of Monday for Sarnia-Lambton residents.

Lambton Public Health Supervisor Dr. Erin Courtney said the shots are available through family doctors' offices. She said 34 area pharmacies will promote access dates and times when they receive the vaccine.

She said the first public clinic will be held on Friday, October 25 at the health unit on Exmouth Street.

"There's four different types of viruses that are in the vaccine," said Courtney. "Two are the influenza A, one is the H1N1 and the other is an H3N2 and then there's two B strains. There's also available a high dose vaccine for those who are 65 years and older and that's available at health care providers and at community clinics."

Infants, seniors and individuals with a chronic health condition are considered to be at most risk from the flu.

Dr. Erin Courtney said cases of the flu have already been confirmed in Ontario.

"It's difficult to predict the severity of the flu virus this season but we're monitoring the situation and prepared for any early or unusual influenza activity," she said. "We do know that it is present in the province, but we haven't had any cases here in Lambton yet."

There were 46 confirmed hospitalized and long-term care outbreak-related influenza cases last year.
