Former Holiday Inn to become Marriott after major renovation

A multi-million dollar renovation of the former Holiday Inn in Point Edward is slated to begin before year's end.

Hotel General Manager Geoff Eisenbraun said after 50 years, the hotel brand changed and they're currently a Sunbridge Hotel and Conference Centre under the Sunray Group umbrella.

"We will be a Sunbridge probably for a good year, maybe a year-and-a-half until all of our renovations are complete at which time we will become a Marriott product, which is a Four Points," said Eisenbraun. "The hotel itself has seen the addition of the tower in 2006, it's 13 years old, so we'll be doing a complete transformation of all the guest rooms, all the public space, the exterior of the hotel, it'll be a complete renovation."

He said the 216 room hotel will remain open during the renovations.

"My understanding is that all the renovations will be done in sections, that's one good thing about it, in the sense that we've got three different areas of the hotel and a big footprint, so there will be no time when the hotel will be closed. We've got two model rooms that are almost completed for the Marriott personnel to come in to inspect and then we start the renovations in earnest," Eisenbraun said.

He said renovation work will begin before the end of the year and take at least a year to complete with the hotel becoming a Four Points by Sheraton by 2021.

Sunray Group acquired the Venetian Boulevard facility after the Holiday Inn built a new hotel just down the road.

In the meantime, Sunray Group has nearly wrapped up a multi-million dollar renovation of the Comfort Inn at 815 Mara St.
