Fire prevention week is underway.
It was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.
Sarnia Fire and Rescue Public Education Officer Mike Otis said families should plan and practice a home escape plan.
"This year's theme is 'not every hero wears a cape, plan and practice your escape', so we want to make sure that all families have a home escape plan," said Otis. "There should be at least two ways out of every room, if possible, and a safe place to meet outside. Make sure you get outside safely, and then call 911 once you're safely outside"
Otis said firefighters will be visiting area schools this week to educate students about fire safety, and there's also a display at Lambton Mall.
Fire prevention week runs through October 12.
