Ducks Unlimited has launched an online crowdfunding campaign hoping to help ramp up phragmites removal from the Lake Huron shoreline.
The Lambton Shores Phragmites Community Group has led the charge on phragmites control for more than 300 acres and since 2012 has also focused a counter-assault against degraded beaches, wetlands and waterways.
"Our municipality was the first in the province to have an invasive phragmites management plan and the first to implement a watershed or a landscape approach in tackling this," said chair Nancy Vidler. "Over the past eight to ten years, we have initiated projects in Port Franks, helped identify phragmites to the property owners in Grand Bend, eradicated it in Lake Valley Grove, Sunningdale and Lambton Centre."
Vidler said they have ongoing projects with the Ipperwash Phrag Fighters, and support of the municipality, county and province in looking after the roadside.
"Our biggest project is a 165-acre wetland complex, southwest of Kettle and Stoney Point First Nation. This is the only coastal wetland adjacent to Carolinian forests on the Lake Huron shoreline, and has a provincially significant designation."
Vidler said the fundraising is for that specific area.
