Real estate president says election important to first-time buyers

The President of the Sarnia-Lambton Real Estate Board is urging first-time homebuyers to pay attention to what federal election candidates are promising.

Donna Mathewson said a home should be a right, not a privilege, as long as you can meet the qualifications.

"It's really important to make sure that first time homebuyers have the opportunity to realize the dream of owning a home in Canada, and it shouldn't just be a dream, it should be a reality," said Mathewson. "It's really important to watch what the different political campaigns are and what their platforms are and what they're going to do to help first time homebuyers get into the market."

Homes in the $200,000 to $300,000 price range are the most popular, with 51 selling in September.

Total sales for the month were down about two per cent at 161, while dollar volume was up 10 per cent at $54 million -- a 10-year high for the month of September.

The average sale price so far this year is $337,000.
