Jackson Pool, Germain Arena on funding application list

Sarnia city council will be asked to endorse a funding application for three projects when it meets on Monday.

There are plans in the works to turn Jackson Pool into a splash pad, redevelop Germain Arena into an indoor multi-purpose facility, and install a new gym at the Strangway Centre.

The city would be responsible for 27 per cent of the costs while the federal and provincial governments would contribute 40 and 33 per cent respectively.

Mayor Mike Bradley said there's money available under the Canada Infrastructure Program.

He isn't sure how much they could receive.

"The idea is to put as much in front of them as possible, and then let them make some choices based on what fits their program," said Bradley. "It does give us a chance to substantially upgrade our recreational facilities, which we have been doing. But, this would be a quantum leap for us. It's my hope that council in general will move forward on this."

Bradley said there should be a proper debate on the future of Jackson Pool before any final decisions are made.

It was closed in 2016, and is in serious need of repairs.

Recommended structural repairs, a pool liner replacement, accessibility upgrades, and asbestos remediation were estimated to cost upwards of $167,000.
