South Vidal benzene removal continues

Suncor will deliver an update on ongoing efforts to remove benzene contamination from a portion of South Vidal Street Monday night.

The discovery was made in 2013 in two water samples taken from a ditch near the Sarnia refinery.

Spokesperson Jennifer Johnson says remediation has been ongoing for the last two years.

“There were protection measures in that area prior to 2013, so the ditch water sampling was done during rainstorms to validate that those protection measures were still effective,” said Johnson. “When we got the results that there were detection’s of benzene in a portion of ditch, that led us to start working with the Aamjiwnaang environment department on coming up with a new approach to protect the area.”

A community information meeting at Aamjiwnaang’s Maawn Doosh Gumig Community and Youth Centre on Virgil Avenue will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
