Legionnaires fall to Chatham in home opener

The Sarnia Legionnaires came up short in their home opener on Thursday, falling 5-2 to the Chatham Maroons at the Brock Street Barn.

The Maroons jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals from Tate Bowden and Maddux Rychel.

Logan Gardiner and Ayden Letang responded with powerplay markers in the second period to even the contest at 2-2.

Ben Schoch assisted on both goals to give him seven points on the season.

The game was tied until 13:47 into the third when Blake Bourdeau scored the eventual game-winner. Bowden scored his second of the night just three minutes later, and Griffin Robinson sealed the Chatham win with an empty netter.

Legionnaires goalie Jakob Knowles made 32 saves on 36 shots, while Tiago Rocha turned aside 32 of 34 shots in the Chatham net.

Sarnia was short players for the game with Joey Ferrera, Cameron Ware, and Wil O'Leary-Dilosa all suspended. Reed Stauffer and Jake Vince are dealing with injuries.

Early in the GOJHL hockey season, Sarnia is 1-1-0-1 and the Maroons sit at 1-0-1-1.

The two teams meet up again next Thursday night at Sarnia Arena.
