Day of Caring raises awareness of United Way campaign

The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton is officially kicking off this year's fundraising campaign with the 26th annual Day of Caring.

On Tuesday, over 240 volunteers from 29 local companies will help complete jobs at 50 locations for individuals and organizations in need.

Event Organizer Pamela Bodkin said the tasks may not otherwise be done due to monetary or health issues. She said 72 per cent of the jobs are being done for people who are elderly or have disabilities.

"Folks are going to be painting, cleaning, gardening, cleaning eavestroughs, cleaning windows, some minor construction and plumbing jobs and some general building maintenance of some non-profit agencies around our community," she said.

The United Way has already raised 20 per cent of its $1.9 million 2019 goal.

Bodkin said although no money is raised from the Day of Caring, it brings awareness to the campaign and could entice others to contribute.
