Lambton College hosts top North American firefighters

Some of the best firefighters from across North America are at Lambton College this weekend.

The school is hosting the Western Ontario Regional FireFit Championships, with 150 of the fastest men and women taking part.

Assistant Coach Shane Bettridge said teams of three to five, including one from the college, will compete in a scaled-down version of the Scott FireFit Challenge.

"They're in their 26th year, simulating what firefighters would do on the job," said Bettridge. "We are the biggest event in Canada other than the nationals. Firefighters are in full gear, they're on air, they're carrying weights, they're pulling charged hoses, they're bringing Rescue Randies that are 175 pounds and drag them backwards 100 feet."

Lambton alumni and world champion Ian Van Reenen will help represent Sarnia Fire and Rescue.

This weekend is also a chance for Lambton's FireFit team to compete in front of their hometown fans after a successful start to the season.

With only two regional challenges under their belts, the 13 member team has already claimed 14 medals. At the Eastern Ontario Regional Challenge on Canada Day weekend, the women claimed gold medals for fastest team time and fastest relay.

For their part, the men snagged a silver in relay and a bronze in team time. Individually, rookie sensation Pat Millington took gold for fastest rookie and Alex Nichols came home with a bronze.

The free weekend event will feature lots of hands-on activities for the whole family including food trucks, fire-related vendors, and a mini replica course for children. Sarnia's Refined Fool has also crafted a unique drink especially for the event, which will be available all weekend at the beer tent.

The competition gets underway on Friday night at 6 p.m. with the corporate relay challenge.

The action continues beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
