Throwchella welcomes 'axeperts' to Sarnia

Sarnia's Valley Axe is welcoming some of the best axe and knife throwers this weekend for the Canadian National Championships.

Co-owner Bo Tait said the event, known as Throwchella, will feature competitors from as far as North Carolina, Quebec, and Western Canada.

The World Axe Throwing League is also using the event as their first outdoor tournament.

Tait said over 80 people, including about 25 local throwers, will be taking part.

"We've had five different people win world titles out of Valley Axe," said Tait. "We also have home-court advantage this weekend which is really nice. We're not camping or sleeping on the ground, we get to go home back to our beds every night. So, it does lend some advantage to being right here in Sarnia."

The competitions are at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, and 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the London Line site.

Tait said people can also try out spear throwing, an atlatl, volleyball courts, and horseshoes.

The weekend also features United Way's second annual Cornhole tournament which gets underway at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Teams of two can register for a $50 fee which benefits the organization.

Saturday night features a concert by Rolling Stones tribute band the Blushing Brides for $20.
