Icelandic fundraising trek Hurry's last as Big Brothers/Sisters exec

An upcoming trek in Iceland will be the last fundraiser for Michael Hurry says as executive director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Sarnia-Lambton.

He'll be joined on the Laugavegur trail by 11 people, including Becky Parent from the Windsor Essex branch.

The trek, which is called one of the best 20 hikes in the world, kicks off August 30.

Hurry said fundraisers like this are extremely important for the organization. He said he wants to leave the agency in a strong financial position when he retires.

"The agency doesn't get any government funding, we're really totally reliant on the community to raise the money to keep the agency going," said Hurry. "Our largest supporter is the United Way, but that money comes from the community as well. We're totally reliant on the community."

Hurry's previous treks have included Mount Kenya, Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Machu Pichu.

The excursions have generated around $750,000 toward the agency's programs and services.

Hurry's personal fundraising goal is $10,000 and around $2,100 has been raised so far.
