Lakeview Cemetery's 'Field of Honour' being restored

Lakeview Cemetery is restoring or improving 135 stones in its "Field of Honour" over the next two years.

General Manager Kelly O'Connor said they will be replacing 24 stones and fixing the alignment of others this year, in the part of the cemetery that's solely reserved for veterans who served our country.

"We were approached last year in the fall from the Commonweath War Graves Commission," said O'Connor. "They had received some funding from the Canadian government to replace stones that had been damaged over the years, or also, we have a series of flat markers instead of the upright stones and the grant would cover replacing those flat markers with upright stones."

O'Connor said work got underway last week and they're planning to reset all of the stones by the end of next year.

"Over time the bases have shifted and it's also a requirement that they're all set to 32 inches above ground, and some of them were not in that position. So, this will allow us to replace the foundations and rectify the leaning or the settling of the stones."

O'Connor said they received $18,000 for the project this year.

"The grant money was lovely to receive, it doesn't cover all of the work that we're doing, we're taking some of that upon ourselves."

She said they hope to complete work on two rows this summer and finish the remaining three rows next year when more funding is received from the commission.

"We're proud of the section and proud of the people that are buried there and for what they contributed," said O'Connor.

In 2017, it was announced that the gravesite of Canada's second prime minister, Alexander Mackenzie, would be cleaned and repaired at Lakeview Cemetery. Those repairs have since been completed.

Since the late 1990's, the Civic holiday in Sarnia has been known as Alexander Mackenzie Day.
