Downtown rainbow crosswalk approved

A rainbow crosswalk is hoped to bring a splash of colour to Sarnia's downtown by the end of October.

Council has approved a proposal from Sarnia-Lambton Rebound's Spectrum Community Action Committee to install a rainbow crosswalk at the intersection of Christina and Lochiel streets.

"I will support the motion because it's the right thing to do," said Councillor Mike Stark.

Councillor Nathan Colquhoun agreed.

"It's a beautiful thing to see our youth unite together to lead us toward becoming a welcoming and loving community, you are taking leadership and challenging the status quo in ways that I did not have the courage to when I was your age," said Colquhoun. "Keep on pushing us and keep putting the pressure on us to ensure our institutions recognize the worth and beauty of all individuals and make safe and welcoming places for everyone. I'm thrilled to support this motion and look forward to seeing what other kinds of ways youth will challenge us to change this city moving forward."

Not everyone was on board with the idea though, and three councillors voted against the proposal in the 5-3 recorded vote.

"I find this is an opportunity where we are being asked to use public property to promote private interests," said councillor Terry Burrell. "I think public property is for everyone and when you designate a particular part for a specific group's interest, I think that takes away from the whole. So, I will not be supporting it."

Councillor Margaret Bird and councillor Dave Boushy, serving as acting mayor in Mike Bradley's absence, also voted against the proposal.

The Rebound committee has agreed to cover the entire cost of the project, estimated at $3,750.

The group hopes to have it installed by October 15, to unveil on Spirit Day -- an annual LGBTQ awareness day -- October 17.
