Early Canada Day in Point Edward

Point Edward residents will celebrate Canada Day early again this year.

For the past few years, the village has held its party on the Thursday before July 1.

CAO Jim Burns said having the festivities at Waterfront Park from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 27 is the perfect way to celebrate the final day of school.

"We're going to have pizza for everybody, cupcakes, a bouncy castle and those types of things," said Burns. "Also the Maynard and Rene Walker Family Scholarship will be announced that afternoon. So just a fun event for the community-- simple but a good opportunity for everyone to come out, and everything is free, so what could go wrong?"

Burns said they'll also have a water dispenser trailer on hand-- those attending are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle.

He said it's a small way for Point Edward to reduce its use of single-use plastics.

"You know it's something that we hear about all the time in the media, and one of the counselors brought up that we should be trying to do something to make our events a little more friendly," said Burns. "And actually OCWA, Ontario Clean Water Agency, is donating the trailer, so it's actually going to save us money."

Burns said the event draws about 500 people every year.
