Plastic bag ban looms

We've been warned and the time has come.

Starting on July 1, recycling and yard waste put to the curb in plastic bags will not be picked up in Sarnia and Point Edward.

Waste Management Coordinator Tina D'Andrea said they'll continue to spread the word this week.

"We are hoping that people will purchase reusable bins, and these reusable bins can be used for their yard waste, we also have the blue boxes for their recycling material, these are a far more responsible choice going forward," said D'Andrea.

Residents are encouraged to drills drainage holes in the bottom of yard waste bins and mark them with an "X" on both sides. They can be any colour but blue -- which is reserved for recycling.

"If people forget, there will be a sticker put on [the plastic bags] telling the homeowner why it wasn't picked up. Hopefully, next go around it will be collected."

Yard waste will also be collected in paper bags. Brush collection remains unchanged.

D'Andrea said new calendars for the remaining six months of this year have been sent out to residents and are also available at city hall.

Additional blue boxes can also be purchased at city hall and public works for $7.

Residents can also download the Recycle Coach app in Google Play or in the App store.
