Cool start to summer following damp, wet spring

It's going to be a cool start to summer in Sarnia-Lambton.

Summer officially arrives Friday, June 21 at 11:54 a.m.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Gerald Cheng said we can expect the cooler trend we've seen this spring to continue for most of July. He said it certainly won't be like last summer with extended periods of extreme heat.

"It doesn't mean that we won't have those extremely hot days," said Cheng. "We are still waiting and we are still watching the pattern. If there's any disturbance in the pattern that will change it and so we could get those days where get into the 30s or even the humidity levels reaching 40 C. But right now, in the foreseeable future, not quite."

Cheng said with fewer hot and humid days during the summer months, the chance of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes drops.

"I don't know if people remember last year around Canada Day there was a heat wave and every day was above 30 C for many places across southwestern Ontario, and right now I'm not seeing that," he said. "Looking into July, I don't see any signals for that kind of pattern."

The summer solstice in the northern hemisphere is the longest day of the year in terms of daylight. The sun will rise at 5:50 a.m. and sets at 9:12 p.m. EDT.
