Officer injured in fall down stairs during arrest

A Sarnia police officer broke an ankle after tumbling down stairs while arresting a break and enter suspect Saturday.

Police responded to a home in the 400 block of Davis Street at around 10:30 p.m.

Cst. John Sottosanti said they had received a call that an intruder, possibly with a gun, was in the kitchen of a residence.

"The suspect was still in the residence when police arrived, and officers noted that it appeared that the suspect was under the influence of some unknown substance," said Sottosanti.

Cst. Sottosanti said the suspect was arrested and handcuffed but allegedly resisted when officers tried to escort him out of the home.

"As the accused was being escorted out of the residence he became agitated and began to scream and yell," he said. "The accused attempted to jam himself against the door to prevent the officers from walking him out to the cruiser. The suspect pushed off the wall, sending the officers tumbling down a set of stairs. At this time, the suspect began to run from police who gave chase."

Constable Sottosanti alleged that the accused broke into another home in the 500 block of Cromwell Street before additional officers arrived to take him into custody.

Cody Richard Stevenson, 22, of Sarnia is charged with two counts of break and enter, escaping lawful custody and mischief.

Cst. Sottosanti said no gun was found, and they don't believe there was one present.
