Sarnia ready to trample cancer at Relay for Life

The Sarnia community is set to walk all over cancer Friday night during the 18th annual Relay for Life at Clearwater Arena Park.

As many as 600 Sarnia-Lambton residents are expected to gather in an effort to raise $104,000 as part of the Canadian Cancer Society's largest nation-wide fundraising initiative.

Fundraising specialist Paula McKinlay said if you've never been to a Relay for Life event, this is the year to check it out.

"It's a fundraiser with teams and individuals throughout the community coming to raise lots of money in support of, and in memory of those that have had a cancer diagnosis," said McKinlay. "Show up at the event and one of our handy-dandy volunteers will direct you where you need to go. It starts at 6 p.m. and the Luminary Lap goes at 10 p.m.-- if you've never experienced it, it's a must -- and then we'll finish everything off at midnight."

There's a number of activities including the relay where team members take turns walking a track.

McKinlay said there will be plenty to do when it's your turn to sit out.

"We'll have zoomba going on throughout the night, face-painting and crafts, sumo wrestling, ga-ga ball, Minute to Win It, Family Feud-- you name it, we'll have a lot for everyone," said McKinlay. "And this year for the first time we'll have a Wall of Hope, so everyone is welcome to dip their hands in paint and press them against the wall to show those affected by cancer that we're here to support them."

McKinlay said they've raised more than $3.5 million locally since the event began.

Every year, about 100,000 Canadians take part in Relay For Life to support the 1 in 2 people expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
