Sarnia woman charged with driving in construction zone

Sarnia police are reminding motorists of the importance of obeying barricades and road closure signs.

Police say a 23-year-old woman was handed a careless driving ticket and $490 fine at a construction zone on Christina Street Monday morning.

Constable John Sottosanti said an officer on scene observed a northbound vehicle swerve into the opposite lanes to get around the blockade.

"We want to remind people that if barricades are up, first of all slow down, and secondly pay attention," said Sottosanti. "We realize that it's an inconvenience but if you injure somebody or yourself, or cause property damage, then obviously that extra minute that it would have taken to go around the area is well worth it."

Sottosanti said this is an ongoing issue and a very serious concern for police.

Detours are posted at the area of Christina Street and Lite Street for the next four weeks.

Other closures around the area include Michigan Avenue from Colborne Road to Christina Street and John Street from Devine Street to Confederation Street.
