Sarnia council briefs

Sarnia council has granted the 32nd Sarnia Pathfinders permission to implement a Yellow Fish Road program.

The program is an interactive way to teach residents the importance of only putting rain down the drain.

Yellow fish will be painted on storm drains in the Retlaw Park area, with information about the program hung on doors in the surrounding areas.

Sarnia council is honouring its agreement with GreekFest to use the Parkway Parking Lot this year -- but the festival may have to find a new location in 2020.

Staff had recommended council deny a request to use the lot, between Cromwell and Lochiel, after receiving complaints from displaced permit holders.

Council felt acting on the recommendation two months before the event, would leave organizers scrambling.

Staff will work with organizers to determine the location for next year's event.

GreekFest is held the first weekend of August.

The event brings thousands of people into the downtown and organizers donate a portion of proceeds to St. Joseph's Hospice.

Property owners on Telfer Road, south of Highway 402, will be excluded from paying the transit levy.

The residents can't access the bus route on the opposite side of the highway and appealed paying the levy.

Bylaws will be amended as a result.

Sarnia's new chief administrative officer has been asked to review what the mayor calls "deficiencies in Centennial Park."

Since the remediated park officially reopened in June 2017, Mike Bradley said a number of individuals and organizations have contacted him with concerns about the positioning of the Agora stage, lack of shelter and seating.

Bradley said concerns have also been raised that previous water and electrical lines were not replaced, and that the therapeutic peace garden isn't accessible.

Council has directed Chris Carter to report back within two months.

Sarnia council has approved a six month pilot project to test the benefits of having an internal grant writer.

A staff member from the Human Resources Department will fill the role on a half-time basis.

The individual will report grant activities to the deputy clerk, who is currently the chair of the Grants Committee.

Draft subdivision plans for a significant housing development south of St. Patrick's Catholic High School have been approved.

The Beaches of Bright's Grove is looking to build 87 single detached homes and 72 townhomes on the parcel of land between Highway 402 and The Rapids Parkway.
