Council to consider grant writer pilot

Sarnia council will consider a six month pilot project Monday to test the benefits of having an internal grant writer.

Council asked staff to explore the idea at its March 4 meeting, after it was presented by councillor Nathan Colquhoun.

Colquhoun said the individual would be responsible for collaborating with all department heads to write grant requests to provincial and federal governments, foundations and corporations.

Councillor Brian White believed there could be merit to it.

"We know through years, and years, and years of doing more with less we often put more pressure than we realize on staff to do things off the side of their desk and perhaps, as successful as we are at times -- and believe me we've been very successful in the last four years at receiving money where available -- it's always a good opportunity to see if we can specialize in this," said White.

Councillor Margaret Bird argued that all senior managers should know how to write grants and voted against the motion.
